Daily Prayers : Hinduism

 Prayer

A prayer is one of the methods of being in communication with God. It, more often than not, takes the shape of addressing the God with the purpose of petitioning, praising, worshipping, confessing or even verbally abusing the chosen deity while in the process being in communication with the God. Or a prayer can also take the form of a person merely pouring out his/her emotions as an act of sharing. One of the main ends of a prayer across all religions and cultures is seeking solace.

Hindu Prayer

In a Hindu’s life, the prayer forms an important component. Every action, event and the ensuing circumstances, success or failure, is filled with prayers. Therefore, in Hindu tradition, prayer takes different and numerous forms compared to other cultures, though the object and motive remain the same.

Arguably, Hinduism is the one religion with maximum number of prayers, worship, rituals and ceremonies. Waking up, going to sleep, bathing, eating meals, studies, travel, name giving, birth, death, marriage, taking medicine and commencing a new venture – to name some, prayers form the important part in all these and the whole life.

In Hinduism, the prayer is called Prārthana. Prārthana is not merely requesting or praising or confessing. It is simply an act of communicating to God. Such an act may not contain any praise or request or for that matter prayer for any particular thing.

Hindu prayers can be broadly classified into mental or Mānasika, verbal or Vācika and physical or kāyika. Staying in the very thought of the Divine and completely forgetting oneself is a mental or Mānasika Prārthana, though, at lower level, a thought about Divine, an appeal or desire about God can also be construed as Mānasika Prārthana. Chanting of mantras, repeating the verses about God, or verbal appeals and requests constitute the Vācika Prārthana. Offering of oblation to fire, making mystical gestures, circumambulation of a temple, prostrating in front of god, lighting and waving the lamps, offering food to god, going on a pilgrimage, etc. constitute physical or Kāyika Prārthana.

In the verbal Prārthana, several mystical syllables are used since these syllables have the power of conveying the Grace of God quicker and also cleansing the aspirant both physically and mentally.

An unique feature of Hindu prayers is that the prayers are not only made to God or Deity and the images representing them, but also to many things that are considered Holy and Sacred as they are manifestations of the Ultimate. So, a Hindu prays to variety of Sages, Saints and Preceptors, the mountains, the rivers and even the trees.

There are set of prayers that a Hindu repeats every day spiritualising and energizing every day existence. There are prayers that are repeated on certain occasions. And there are prayers that are meant for special occasions.

Following are a few daily prayers and some useful prayers to various gods and for specific occasions. [Please Note: There could be minor variations in the mantras provided in this series, due to regional differences, etc.]

CREATION OF LIFE

March 5, 2011 Comments Off on CREATION OF LIFE

Creation: the act of producing or causing to exist; the act of creating;
engendering. Life: the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects
and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism,
reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes
originating internally.

Hinduism [1] By activating the material elements, the primeval Soul of all creation has sent forth all living beings in higher and lower species so that these conditioned souls can cultivate either sense gratification or ultimate liberation, according to their desire. (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 11.3.3)

[2] The Supersoul enters the material bodies of the created beings, activates the mind and senses, and thus causes the conditioned souls to approach the three modes of material nature for sense gratification. (Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 11.3.4)

Religious Science (Science of Mind) [1] God thinks, and the world comes into being. Likewise, all human accomplishments originate in thought. Our human thinking process is a reflection of the Divine Creative Process in microcosm. (Source – Foundational Class workbook [short form], 1993 revision, #3 of 10 Core Concepts, ReligiousScience.org website publication)

[2] Science knows energy as indestructible and limitless. It appears in tangible form as substance. Nothing is either added to or taken from it. Therefore, we conclude that all change is a play of Life upon Itself. It is an inner movement of the Creative Principle upon Itself, which constitutes Its sole and only activity. (Source – Ernest Holmes, Practical Application of Science of Mind, excerpted in Science of Mind magazine, Nov 2008)

[3] Creation – The giving of form to the Substance of Mind. Creation always was and always will be. To be conscious is to create, because Spirit has to be conscious, and therefore must have something of which to be conscious. Creation is God making something out of Himself, or Itself, by becoming the thing He creates. The thought of God, coming into expression must go on forever. We must understand that Creation does not mean making something out of nothing, but means the passing of Substance into form, through a law which is set in motion by the Word of Spirit. There could not be a time when the activity of Spirit would cease. The whole action of Spirit must be within Itself, upon the Law (which is also within Itself) and upon the Universal Stuff, or matter, which is also within Itself. The three must in reality be One; hence, “The Trinity”. (Source – Glossary – The Science of Mind – A Philosophy, A Faith, A Way of Life by Ernest Holmes)

Hinduism:

Part 1 – Chapter 1: The Creation of Virat

Verse 1
In the beginning all this verily was Atman only, one and without a
second. There was nothing else that winked. He bethought Himself: “Let
Me now create the worlds.”

Verse 2
He created these worlds: Ambhah, the world of water-bearing clouds,
Marichi, the world of the solar rays, Mara, the world of mortals and Ap,
the world of waters. Yon is Ambhah, above heaven; heaven is its
support. The Marichis are the interspace. Mara is the earth. What is
underneath is Ap.

Verse 3
He bethought Himself: “Here now are the worlds. Let Me now create
world-guardians.” Right from the waters He drew forth the Person in the
form of a lump and gave Him a shape.

Verse 4
He brooded over Him. From Him, so brooded over, the mouth was separated
out, as with an egg; form the month, the organ of speech; from speech,
fire, the controlling deity of the organ.
Then the nostrils were separated out; from the nostrils, the organ of
breath; from breath, air, the controlling deity of the organ.
Then the eyes were separated out; from the eyes, the organ of sight;
from sight, the sun, the controlling deity of the organ.
Then the ears were separated out; from the ears, the organ of hearing;
from hearing, the quarters of space, the controlling deity of the organ.
Then the skin was separated out; from the skin, hairs, the organ of
touch; from the hairs, plants and trees, air the controlling deity of
the organs.
Then the heart was separated out; from the heart, the organ of the mind;
from the mind, the moon, the controlling deity of the organ.
Then the navel was separated out; from the navel, the organ of the
apana; from the apana, Death, Varuna, the controlling deity of the
organ.
Then the virile member was separated out; from the virile member, semen,
the organ of generation; from the semen, the waters, the controlling
deity of the organ.

Part 1 – Chapter 2: Cosmic Powers in the Human Body

Verse 1
These deities, thus created, fell into this great ocean. He subjected
the Person to hunger and thirst. They said to Him: “Find out for us an
abode wherein being established we may eat food.”

Verse 2-3
He brought them a cow. They said: “But this is not enough for us.” He
brought them a horse. They said: “This, too, is not enough for us.”
He brought them a person. The deities said: “Ah, this is well done,
indeed.” Therefore a person is verily something well done.
He said to the deities: “Now enter your respective abodes.”

Verse 4
The deity fire became the organ of speech and entered the mouth. Air
became breath and entered the nostrils. The sun became sight and entered
the eyes; the quarters of space became hearing and entered the ears.
Plants and trees, the deity of air, became hairs and entered the skin.
The moon became the mind and entered the heart. Death became the apana
and entered the navel. The waters became semen and entered the virile
member.

Verse 5
Hunger and thirst said to the Creator: “For the two of us find an abode
also.” He said to them: “I assign the two of you to these deities; I
make you co-sharers with them.”
Therefore to whatsoever deity an oblation is made, hunger and thirst
became sharers in it.

Part 1 – Chapter 3: The Embodiment of the Supreme Self

Verse 1
He bethought Himself: “Here now are the worlds and the world-guardians.
Let Me cerate food for them.”

Verse 2
He brooded over the waters. From the waters, thus brooded over, there
emerged a condensed form. The form that so emerged is indeed food.

Verse 3
The food so created wished to flee away. He sought to grasp it with
speech. But He was not able to grasp it with speech. If, indeed, He has
grasped it with speech, one would then have been satisfied by merely
uttering the word food

Verse 4-10
The Creator sought to grasp it with the breath. But He was not able to
grasp it with the breath. If, indeed, He had grasped it with the breath,
one would then have been satisfied by merely smelling food.
He sought to grasp it with the eye. But He was not able to grasp it with
the eye.
If, indeed, He had grasped it with the eye, one would then have been
satisfied by merely seeing food.

He sought to grasp it with the ear. But He was not able to grasp it with
the ear.
If, indeed, He had grasped it with the ear, one would then have been
satisfied by merely hearing of food.
He sought to grasp it with the skin. But He was not able to grasp it
with the skin.
If, indeed, He had grasped it with the skin, one would then have been
satisfied by merely touching food.
He sought to grasp it with the mind. But He was not able to grasp it
with the mind.
If, indeed, He had grasped it with the mind, one would then have been
satisfied by merely thinking of food.
He sought to grasp it with the virile member. But He was not able to
grasp it with the virile member.
If, indeed, He had grasped it with the virile member, one would then
have been satisfied by merely emitting food.
He sought to grasp it with the apana and He grasped it.
This grasper of food is what vayu, air or prana is. This vayu is what
lives on food.

Verse 11
He bethought Himself: “How could this exist without Me?” Then He said to
Himself: “Which way shall I enter it?” he said to Himself further: “If
speech is uttered by the organ of speech, if smelling is done by the
breath, seeing by the eyes, hearing by the ears, touching by the skin,
thinking by the mind, eating by the apana and the emission of semen by
the virile member, them who am I?”

Verse 12
So, piercing the end, the Lord entered through that door. That door is
known as the vidriti, the cleft. This is the place of bliss.
Atman, thus embodied, has three abodes, three conditions of sleep. This
is one abode, this is another, this is the third.

Verse 13
Having been born as the jiva, He realised the elements as one with
Himself. What else here would one desire to speak about?
He perceived this very person as the all-pervading Brahman. He said:
“Ah, I have seen It.”

Verse 14
Therefore He is called Idandra. Idandra, indeed is His name. Him who is
Idandra they call indirectly Indra.

Aitareya Upanishad

Sikhism

What is the time, season, day, month, of creation? Knows None.
Not the Pundits, even if it be in the text of a Puran;
Nor the Qazi does who interprets the Quran.
Nor Yogi knows the date, season, month, but the One
Who Created the Universe, Knoweth alone. (Jap M. 1)

Judaism

The Hebrew Creation story tells us of a river that emerges from out of
the deepest of mysteries, from the Infinite Being of all beings. This
beautiful wellspring carries us through our earthly existence and
remains pure always, undisturbed by the turmoil of our life journey,
gifting us with a core sense of balance and reminding us of God’s
unconditional love. In down-to-earth terms, this is your heart of
hearts, which is always pure, always virtuous, even through the mistakes
we sometimes make. To this heart of hearts we can always turn and
return again, and from within her we can remember and rediscover the
precious primordial “ I ” with which God gifted us at our creation. As
is written: “A pure heart did God create in me; a spirit of authenticity
did God renew deep in me” (Psalms 51:12).

Eulogy on Supreme God
HinduismO the One, Who is the Lord of the universe, Who is the Lord of the wise, Who is the Lord of the living, Who is brilliant, Who is the supreme ruler, Who is beyond
everything, Who is like our son (in the sense of doing everything for
us), Who is like our father, Who absolves the cycle of life and death of
everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in this life-cycle of existence,
who is bowing to you, who is the fallible one, and who has lost his
wisdom and strength.||1||O the One, Who absolves the cycle of life and death of everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in this
life-cycle of existence, who is without any qualities, poor and polluted
at mind, who is away with respect to the protective and endowing glance
of Your’s, and who is engrossed in the maintenance and fallible
activities all the time.||2||

My fish-like-life has fallen into a huge desert, without water, and you can save it by the glance of your
merciful-ocean like eyes. O the One, Who absolves the cycle of life and
death of everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in this life-cycle of
existence.||3||

O the One, Who absolves the universe, Who is the reason (for everything), Who is the expander of Karma, Who is eternally
blissful! I am lost in the ocean-like cycle of life and death. Please
bless me with Your mercy and let me float out of it. O the one, Who
absolves the cycle of life and death of everyone! Absolve me, who is
troubled in this life-cycle of existence.||4||

O the blissful One! Destroy my life, which has flooded this earth with huge amount of
sins, and which is the cause of my interest in infinite amount of evil
and sinful interests. O the One, Who absolves the cycle of life and
death of everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in this life-cycle of
existence.||5||

O the One, Who is the creator of the world, Who liberates from the fear of hell, Who is the absolver of universe, Who
revives the fallen ones, Who absorbs (fear, pride, passion, etc.), Who
possesses bliss in His hands, Who absolves the cycle of life and death
of everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in this life-cycle of
existence, and who (only) chooses to do menial things.||6||

O the One, Who is infallible, Who is blissful, Who is bountiful of boons! I
am very thirsty for the ultimate potion (ambrosia), please shower it on
me. O the One Who absolves the cycle of life and death of everyone!
Absolve me, who is troubled in this life-cycle of existence, and who is
getting destroyed by the captivity of ignorance.||7||

I continuously bow to You, Who expurgates the paraphernalia created in the
mind by our birth in this world, Who is beyond the qualities, Who is
infinite, Who is the way, and Who is the shelter. O the One Who absolves
the cycle of life and death of everyone! Absolve me, who is troubled in
this life-cycle of existence.||8||

Fear

And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
And behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we
perish.
And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Forgiveness

March 5, 2011 Comments Off on Forgiveness

“I am giving myself the gift of forgiveness.”
Source: Brennie’s  affirmations on forgiveness

Ho’oponopono
Dear Father:
Here we acknowledge the Creator who gives Unconditional Love.  If you
believe that you are the result of an explosion or worse still that you
created yourself, you are going to have a lot of trouble with this
one.The word Father means “Giver Of Life” and I am sure you realise that
it has nothing to do with bearded patriarchs.Addressing the Creator is
fundamental to this process, since only the Creator can fix the mess
that we (and our ancestors) have created.

I am sorry
This statement opens the door to atonement.  The moment you take responsibility for any
negative manifestation you experience or witness you also create an
opportunity for healing.  The apology is not directed to the Creator.
The Creator is Spirit and does not need nor care about apologies.  The
apology is an acknowledgement that we are sorry for whatever it is that
we (or our ancestors before us) have done to cause the adverse
circumstance to take place. There is no need to grovel, just a simple “I
am sorry” will do.

Please forgive me
We are asking for forgiveness for having forgotten how much the Creator loves us.We are asking for forgiveness
for having shut out the Creator from our lives and missing out on all
the wonderful experiences that we could have had.We ask for forgiveness
with the absolute certainty that it has already been granted.  The
Creator is Spirit and is Unconditional Love, incapable of experiencing
feelings of anger, resentment and all the other ego related neurotic
behaviours that afflict humans. It is important to note here that
Ho’oponopono practitioners never have to forgive anyone, since they
realise that all wrongdoing is the result of their own wrong action or
memories–past or present.

I love you
When Jesus was asked “which is the greatest commandments of them all” he surprised everyone (typical) and stated
“You shall love the Lord Your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind.”Love is a great healing power.  Sending the
Creator an SMS of love will reverberate through your psyche and
generate an immediate feeling of well being. Once again being pure
Spirit, the Creator, does not need your love, but the very act of
thinking loving thoughts will tune your mind to that frequency with
remarkable and immediate results.

And I thank you
As stated  earlier, whatever your petition or concern, the moment you take responsibility for its
occurrence and seek a way out–you are guaranteed a response.Almost
invariably the response will never be what you expect (or in some cases
want)–but what you need to start the process of healing or
reconstruction.Your “thank you” is the acknowledgement that your
petition has been heard and acted upon–that is all.

Blessings of Divine Grace
Blessings of Divine Grace

On behalf of my Religious Background, the one I was born into, whether I practice it or
not

Through all time and space
and all levels and dimensions…both seen and unseen…known and unknown

If anyone has caused any hurt or pain
be it real or imagined….purposeful or accidental

I apologize and seek forgiveness

And if anyone else from anyone else’s religious background

Through all time and space
and all levels and dimensions…both seen and unseen…known and unknown

Has caused any hurt or pain
be it real or imagined….purposeful or accidental

All is forgiven and all is released

at the Religious Background level all contracts are complete, all debts have
been payed and all Karma is
balanced

As we accept and embrace the Joy and Enlightenment that is unfolding upon the planet at this
time.

And we ask The Divine Presence to bring Grace and Divine Blessings to this area of our lives…
and to all the Religious Leaders and Policy Makers on the Planet

Blessings of Divine Grace

Oh, Daughter of the Mountain, Who
makes the whole World happy,
Who makes all the Universe rejoice, Who is praised by Nandin,
Who dwells on the peaks of the great Vindhya Mountains,
with radiance reaching far and wide, Who is praised by those
desirous of victory,
Oh Goddess, Wife to blue-necked Shiva, Mother to many families, Doer of many deeds,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully plaited hair!

bestows boons upon the Gods, Who defeats the undisciplined,
Who tolerates the ignorant, Who is ever rejoicing,
Who nourishes the three worlds, Who pleases Shankara,
Who removes sins, Who inhabits the sound of AUM,
Whose wrath befalls the progeny of the demons Danu and Diti,
Who destroys those drunk on the evil intoxicant of pride, Who
is Daughter of the Ocean!
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully plaited hair!

Whose dwelling is in the tallest peaks of the Himalayas, the greatest of all mountain chains,
Who is so very sweet, Who keeps the treasures of Madhu and Kaitabha, Who slayed
Kaitabha, Who is ever dancing,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!

Who splinters demons’ heads into hundreds of shards, Who
severs the trunks of their great battle elephants,
Whose great Lion mount exhibits terrifying valor, as he tears apart the temples of the
enemy’s elephants
Who shatters the skulls of enemy chieftains with the strength of her own arms,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully plaited hair!

it is You Who possesses the invinceable force that vanquishes
hard-to-subdue enemies in battle
Who promoted Pramatha, the great attendant of Shiva,
a master of subtle thinking, to be Her general in battle,
Who destroyed the messengers of the demons, who were sinful,
with evil intention in their thoughts and minds,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!

Oh, it is You Who gives protection to the wives of heroic
enemy warriors when they seek refuge;
Who aims a flawless spear at the head of the demon who causes great pain in all the three worlds,
Who burns like a blazing hot sun, inflamed by the resounding din of the
war-drums of the Gods,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully plaited hair!

Oh, it is You Who, with a single roar, disperses the streams
of smoke flowing from the eyes of advancing demons,
Who thrives like a vine on the blood that falls on the battleground,
Who delights alike in the company of the auspicious Shiva, inauspicious Shumbha and
Nishumbha, and the ghoulish spirits who feed on the battle carnage,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!

Who decks Her tender limbs with
fine dancing ornaments at the moment of battle, as She readies Her bow,
Who slays huge enemy soldiers with Her shining sword and arrows from
Her golden-brown quiver,
Who plays with the vast enemy forces arrayed on the battlefield
as if they were screaming toy soldiers,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!
Victory, Daughter of the Himalayas, with beautifully plaited hair!

Who attracts Shiva’s attention with the tinkling of Her bells and ornaments as She dances
Who delights in Her own beautiful singing, and Her dance in the form of Ardhanari,
Victory, victory to You, Oh Slayer of the Buffalo Demon!

Benevolent Goddess, accompanied by Shiva, when one daily cherishes Your

Then, Oh lotus-dwelling Lakshmi, how will one not become wealthy?
